The Sir John Madejski Scholarship

We are proud to have been recognised by one of the UK’s most respected businessmen for the launch of a scholarship scheme which each year will offer free 11+ tuition to an underprivileged child.

What Sir John Madejski Says About Us

Sir John MadejskiI am a great admirer of Marie Redmond’s work and her personal passion for academic success in young people. The fact that her expertise is now available to children in Reading provides a great opportunity for parents who can see potential in their children that needs some extra help to be fulfilled.”

Sir John spent time in a children’s home as a baby during what he refers to as an ‘unstructured childhood’. His achievements in life have been many and include becoming Chancellor of the University of Reading and rebuilding the former Thamesbridge College as the John Madejski Academy. He initiated and funded The John Madejski Centre for Reputation at Henley Business School at The University of Reading.  He is also a benefactor to the Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly, London and in 2004 had the John Madejski Fine Rooms at Burlington House named after him in recognition of a contribution of £3 million to the institution.

Selecting the Candidate

First Days charity logoThe scholarship candidates in Berkshire will be selected by the charity First Days, our partner in Reading.  The First Days team works to reduce the long-term effects of poverty on children by equipping them with the essentials they need for their early years and schooling. In this first year, criteria to be considered will include the effects of COVID-19 in widening the educational gap.

Emma Cantrell First DaysWhat Emma Cantrell, CEO of First Days says about the scholarship: “We strongly believe that every child deserves the same start in life. Our work focuses on helping parents ensure their children are safe, have fun and are confident in school. This new scholarship has the potential to give huge amounts of confidence to children, not just in their education but into adult life as well, and we are really pleased to be working with Marie Redmond and Sir John Madejski to change the lives of disadvantaged children in Reading.”

Please Support First Days

It’s a sad fact that four million children in the UK are living in households whose income falls below the poverty line. After they’ve paid for their housing and utilities, they have just £19 per day to live on.

First Days helps Berkshire families in crisis who need something for their children and simply cannot afford it. This may include school uniforms, new baby essentials, travel items, toiletries, safety equipment, furniture, toys and books. With no government or statutory funding, the charity relies on donations of essentials and on fundraisers. After eight years, its staff and volunteers have helped over 10,000 children and distributed over 250 tonnes of donated goods.

Each month we are also donating bedding or toiletries to First Days.  They would be very grateful for your donations through their Amazon wish lists:
