Berks, Bucks and Slough 11 Plus Summer School

Bucks, Berks and Slough 11 Plus Summer School Courses

All too often, teachers notice the slide in academic ability that occurs during the long summer holiday. Don’t let that affect your child’s chances of achieving in the 11 Plus – let them join us for our 5-day* Year 5 Bucks, Berks and Slough 11 Plus Summer School in Amersham (near Chesham), Aylesbury, Beaconsfield and Stoke Poges (near Gerrards Cross and Slough).

*Course 5 is 4 days long due to the bank holiday.

In the Summer School, we concentrate on exam techniques and skills gaps, to prepare pupils for the imminent test – and include a mock exam on the final day. Educational games and activities are an integral part of the course so that children enjoy their lessons and remain engaged throughout.

Each week is different, so your child can attend one, or any number of the courses.

What you can expect for your child

We develop pupils’ knowledge so they’re equipped to answer a broad range of challenging verbal, mathematical and non-verbal reasoning questions. In addition to their personal targets, time will be spent working on:

Verbal skills

  • Comprehension
  • Verbal reasoning (vocabulary: the production of words, use of words and relationships between words)
  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Punctuation

Mathematical skills (numerical reasoning)

  • Basic skills (addition, multiplication,
    division and subtraction)
  • Mental maths development
  • Problem solving techniques
  • Extracting information from
    graphs and tables
  • Fractions and ratios
  • Foundation algebra concepts

Non-verbal skills

  • Spatial awareness
  • Logical deduction skills
  • Mathematical concepts such as
    symmetry, rotation and reflection

Small classes

We have small class sizes, which means that your child will have valuable one-to-one attention with their fully qualified teacher.

Mock exam

We set a mock exam at the end of each Year 5 summer course, to make sure your child’s completely comfortable with exam conditions before it really counts. The results of the exam will help us understand if they’ve achieved their individual targets and provide you with feedback and an analysis of their strengths and areas to focus on.

Breaks

To help your child consolidate their memories and continue to absorb new information, we include one 10 minute break during each of the first four days of the course.

The importance of sleep

As sleep plays an important role in consolidating new memories, we recommend that your child gets as much sleep as possible during the week of their summer course and any key periods of learning. School-age children need between 9 and 12 hours of sleep a night and there are a few simple things you can do to help them get to sleep, such as turning off the TV, tablet or computer at least two hours before bedtime – the light from these can interfere with the production of the hormone melatonin, which affects sleep-wake cycles.

Fees

In addition to the course fees, there is a charge for Summer School books, ranging from £38 to £55 depending on the number of weeks your child attends and which exam board they are preparing for. This will be added to your invoice and due by the end of June. We accept payment by bank transfer, cheque, or any childcare voucher scheme.

If your child already studies with us, they’ll be eligible for a 10% discount on our fees below (excludes book fees).

Joe did well in his 11+ – he got 133, so qualified for grammar school, and we’re especially pleased with how he approached the test. He was very calm and unflustered. I’m sure the week he spent with your team over summer played a big part in this, so many thanks to you all.
Year 5 parent, Chalfont St Peter (2017)

Thank you very much for marking and returning his mock test so quickly, and for the useful answer booklet you have emailed us. We will find it very helpful to go through the paper with him. I would like to say a big thank you for the course last week. As I mentioned when we booked, my son is a fairly shy boy and is not very confident with new people or in new situations. I was delighted to see him relaxed and happy after every session he did with Sarah, and he commented afterwards that it was fun as well as hard work. It is not an easy balance to achieve, so thank you for your thoughtful approach. It was a huge relief to see him being encouraged in such a friendly manner, as the last thing we wanted was to put undue pressure on him – that is why we chose your course, having had a good experience with our older son three years ago. The advice you have given us is very useful, and I would be grateful if you could pass this message on to Sarah as well, so she can see that we are grateful for her work with him.

Year 5 parent, Windsor (Summer 2016)
Thank you for the course and I will be sure to recommend you and no doubt be back again when my daughter will be starting.
Year 5 parent, Gerrards Cross (Summer 2016)
Ollie thoroughly enjoyed his week with the teacher and the other pupils. He said that the teacher was really nice and made him feel relaxed. He thought the other pupils were very nice. Although Ollie is not generally very keen on anything that requires him to put in some effort he was really keen to go along each day and felt his week went really well. Thank you for everything. I will definitely recommend your summer course to my friends.
Year 5 parent, High Wycombe (2016)

Year 5 parent, Slough (2016)
I’m delighted to say that Connie passed her 11+ with a score of 167. Thank you very much for your contribution to that. We opted for your week long holiday course to kick start the ‘back to work’ moment. The structure and games that made up the classes plus completing the week with a mock were a great start to that process, just the right tone and content. In addition she chose to come to your one off Saturday class just before the exam on the Thursday and this too helped her with techniques for managing exam stress. Many thanks again and all the best for 2016.
Year 5 parent, Beaconsfield (2015)

He passed and got an amazing score – 137!!! Thank you SO much for all your help and patience with him this summer, it really paid off for him to have those sessions with you. He is delighted to be able to join his brother at Dr Challoners next year!! Thank you again (we can’t thank you enough)!!
